The island of Maio is characterized by a very gentle topography, with small elevations, being classified as a shallow or flat island, in conjunction with the other two eastern islands (Sal and Boavista).
In the Biosphere Reserve of Maio Island, there are several dune ecosystems and two large coastal plains characterized by salty land: in the north, the system of Terras Salgadas, Morrinho and Laje Branca and in the southwest, the salt fields of Porto Inglês.
In terms of terrestrial habitats, the island has two main types: a very dry zone corresponding to the coastal strip at altitudes of up to 150 meters and an arid zone corresponding to the altitude range between 250 and 437 meters.
From a social standpoint, the Maio island has its very own traditions and interaction patterns between nature and mankind, which are clearly evident through its cultural manifestations, especially its relationship with the sea, both in terms of fishing and salt production.
