BIOSPHERE RESERVE OF CORVO ISLAND.
Year of creation
2007
The Biosphere Reserve of Corvo Island is home to several endemic bird species, as well as nesting place for various seabird species considered of worldwide conservation interest, such as the Cory's shearwater (Calonectris borealis).
This Biosphere Reserve serves as a laboratory for experiments in biodiversity conservation and, due to its unique natural characteristics, is frequently visited by national and international scientific expeditions.
The establishment of innovative management solutions, combined with the local's interest in communal resource management and the existing infrastructures, allow Corvo to be a prime location for research projects. Of particular relevance is Caneiro dos Meros, the only voluntary reserve in Azores, created through a process of dialogue and consultation between fishermen and divers, given the presence of Atlantic goliath groupers (Epinephelus itajara) in this area.
