BIOSPHERE RESERVE OF FLORES ISLAND.
Year of creation
2009
The Biosphere Reserve of Flores Island, in the Azores, stands as the westernmost point of the European continent. To its unique geographical position are added the environmental and cultural values, which are regionally, nationally and internationally unrivalled.
Flores abounds in water, and due to this high level of humidity, the landscape is filled with various shades of green, being home to extensive areas of peat bogs, numerous streams and waterfalls, as well as volcanic craters that have turned into lagoons.
The authenticity of Flores' nature manifests in its endemic flora and in the geological and volcanic phenomena that sprout from every corner.
The history and identity of the Florentinos is marked by their relationship with the land and the sea, expressed in their tangible and intangible heritage: centuries-old volcanic stone houses, corn stacks, haystacks, churches, gastronomy, handicrafts, multiple festivities, fishing and the history of whaling.
