BIOSPHERE RESERVE OF THE GREEN BELT OF SÃO PAULO.
Year of creation
1994
The Biosphere Reserve of the Green Belt of São Paulo (BRGB) comprises the Metropolitan Regions of São Paulo and Baixada Santista, covering 78 municipalities surrounding the city of São Paulo, including the capital itself. It comprises public and private, urban, peri-urban and rural areas, coastal and marine territories, conservation units, water source protection zones, among others. The BRGB's territory is dominated by the Atlantic Forest biome, with some occurrences of the Cerrado biome.
In accordance with the guidelines of the UNESCO MAB Program, the BRGB's main mission is to encourage and promote environmental conservation, sustainable development, and the dissemination of traditional and scientific knowledge. The ecosystems in the Green Belt zone are directly responsible for providing environmental services that are essential to the health and well-being of more than 25 million inhabitants, such as: geological and biodiversity support; provision of water, food and forest products; maintenance of genetic resources; regulation of air and water quality, climate, soil erosion, pollination, natural threats, diseases and pests; as well as cultural services such as tourism, leisure, aesthetics, and spiritual values.
The geographical region covered by the BRGB is characterized by one of the largest human population concentrations in the world and one of the largest economic hubs in Latin America, where the high level of human activity constantly impacts and pressures its ecosystems.
